French President Emmanuel Macron has said that he is implementing a law to ban the use of mobile phones in the country’s high schools from the new academic year. News Anadolu.
On Monday, Macron said on social media X, ‘protection of children from the harmful effects of excessive use of screens cannot wait any longer.
He also said, ‘phone-free school means restoring the tranquility of studies.’
Earlier on Monday, French government spokesman Jorge Brezon said that after Macron’s decision, the mobile phone ban in high schools may come into effect as soon as the new academic year begins.
The law aimed at protecting minors from risks related to the use of social media was passed on July 21.
But the law’s most important provision— prohibits children under the age of 15 from using social media.
Despite this, Brezon said, the provision banning mobile phones in high schools will come into effect under the ‘stable, integrated and legal’ framework.
He also said that Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu will work on the new version of social media provisions taking into account the concerns of the Constitutional Council.
The government aims to establish an amended legal framework to protect children and youth by next spring.
