- The British Broadcasting Corporation or BBC has announced the layoff of 21,500 workers. This number is 10 percent of the BBC’s total workforce. Earlier in 2011, there was a huge layoff. Then until 2025, such a large-scale layoff did not happen on the BBC.
This decision was announced at the all-staff meeting organized at the BBC’s central office in London on Wednesday. According to a report by the British daily The Guardian, British businessman and EMEA Business Group leader Matthew John Britton, better known as Matt Britin, will become the new director general of the BBC on May 18. The BBC announced the layoff a month before Matt Britin arrived.
However, there was a glimpse of a major layoff at the BBC in February. That month, the BBC announced that the company aimed to save £600 million from its budget. Tim Davey, the BBC’s director-general at the time, said the company was considering cutting 10 percent of its workforce to save money.
